Native Costa Rican calls
Sacrlet Macaw, a
large, red, yellow and blue South American parrot,
as Lapa. The
Eco-lodge is named after this parrot as you’ll likely see this bird while
staying at Lapa Rios. There is an interesting story behind this name. John and
Karen Lewis, the owners of the Eco lodge, noticed that when the scarlet macaws
fly accross the jungle, they look like a river or rio! That's why John and
Karen thought it would be a perfect mach if they name their eco lodge
"Lapa Rios".
They had a dream to make this
property not only an eco lodge but also a private nature reserve. They decided
to invest all their capital to purchase of a large tract of rain-forest. After
purchasing 930-acre Lapa Rios Reserve, they started building a small,
sustainable eco lodge in 1993. They wanted that the land they purchased
will remain as it is now forever. To ensures that this primary forest will be
preserved in perpetuity, recently they signed a conservation easement
elaborated by The Nature Conservancy and CEDARENA.
